LifeSkills program

Vallecito's LifeSkills program is not merely a nice extra, but rather is an essential part of our students’ education. The guiding philosophy behind LifeSkills is that children need to learn and practice positive character traits alongside their academic skills. Click here to learn more about LifeSkills.

Student Council

The Student Council is comprised of fourth and fifth grade students who campaign and are elected to the offices of president, vice president, secretary, treasurer and historian. The Council plans school-wide events such as Spirit Days (e.g., Crazy Hat Day, Backwards Day, Pajama Day), takes on special projects, and leads monthly LifeSkills assemblies.

Green Team

Second and third grade students are elected in each class as representatives to the Green Team that directs the school in energy and resource conservation.

Family Life

Fifth grade students participate in a two-week Family Life program designed to introduce them to issues of adolescence. Parents are invited to attend an evening meeting about the program curriculum and are invited to preview course materials. Written parental permission is required for participation in the program.

Gifted Learner Program (GLP)

The Dixie School has a Gifted Learner Program (GLP) that was proposed by an advisory committee of staff and parents who revised the former GATE program. Students may qualify for participation in either of two categories: outstanding intellectual potential or outstanding creativity coupled with achievement.

Students in grade 3 through 7 may be referred for screening in either category by parents or staff. Referral forms are available in the office. Identified students may take an array of classes provided through the Discovery Day program. Differentiated instruction is offered by the classroom teacher.

Student Recognition and Achievement

Vallecito presents several awards at graduation time to selected fifth grade students who demonstrate outstanding achievement in a variety of categories. For a list of awards, click here.
