LifeSkills Program

Vallecito's LifeSkills program is not merely a nice extra, but rather is an essential part of our students’ education. The guiding philosophy behind LifeSkills is that children need to learn and practice positive character traits alongside their academic skills.

Getting along with others, solving problems, and developing strong work habits are all critical skills for success in the workplace. There is further evidence that character education not only helps with a child’s social development, but also with his/her academic success as well.

Recent research shows that the average student enrolled in a social and emotional learning program ranks at least 10 percentile points higher on achievement tests than students who do not participate in such programs.

Parents, you can also encourage the practice of LifeSkills at home. You could even give your own family awards! When your child is recognized at school, be sure to talk with your child about the award s/he received and celebrate this success in your family -- have a special dinner, make a favorite dessert, set aside family time for a game or activity of the child’s choosing. Let them know that you are proud of them!

Each month is highlighted with a new LifeSkill, and the LifeSkills message for the month is reinforced at our Wednesday assembly through a skit written and performed by Vallecito's Student Council.

LifeSkills are taught on two-year cycles.
